The Does Song

The Does Song - this is just for fun.  It sang badly but that's just to make you feel good!

More seriously, a lot of people mispronounce this word.

Also does is a grammatical word, it helps English, sound well, English.  It helps us form questions and the negative. For example;

What does she want to eat?
Does he like her?
She doesn't like seafood.
No, he doesn't like her in the way you mean, he just likes her as a friend.

Many learners simply don't use 'does', but if they did, their English would sound more natural.

Here's the script for the video.

Does – a very common English word but one that learners struggle with.  I’ve often heard ‘doos, do-es’.
One of the problems is that people look at the word
(increase to screen size)
Does that help?  In my experience, it doesn’t.

Now, if I say it slowly – Duh-eh-ss.  Duhehss.  But is that really going to help you?
OK, OK, OK, I really hate it but let’s sing.  We’re going to sing about something a lot of British people love.
First listen;
I love beer, Yes, I do
I love beer, Yes, I do
I love beer, Yes, I do
I love beer, Yes, I do
I love beer, And so does Tom.
I love beer, and so does Tom,
I love beer, and so does Tom,
Does Tom love beer? Yes, he does.
Does Tom love beer? Yes, he does.
Does Tom love beer? Yes, he does.
And what about Clare?
Well, she doesn’t exactly LOVE beer, not like Tom does!
But she does drink it.
So pick up a beer and listen along.
Does, does, does, does, does, does
Does, does, does, does, does, does
Does, does, does, does, does, does
Tom drinks beer. Yes, he does.
Tom drinks beer. Yes, he does.
Tom drinks beer. Yes, he does.
Tom drinks beer. Yes, he does.
Tom drinks beer, and so does Clare
Tom drinks beer, and so does Clare
Tom drinks beer, and so does Clare
Tom drinks beer, and so does Clare

What does Tom Love?  He loves beer.
What does Tom drink? He drinks beer.
How does Tom drink beer? He drinks fast.
Where does Tom drink?  He drinks in a pub.
Who does Tom drink with? Almost anyone will do.
Why does Tom drink? Because he loves it.
When does Tom drink?  Almost every day.
Does, does, does, Yes, Tom does.
Does, does, does, Yes, Clare does.
Does beer taste good? Yes, it does.
Does Tom love beer? Yes, he does.
Does Clare drink beer? Yes, she does.
Sorry, I’m not sure….. Tom drinks beer, doesn’t he?  Yes, he does

Well, I hope that helps! Because I hate singing!
Anyway, it’s your turn to sing now.
Grab a beer or if you don’t drink beer, grab a water or grab a coffee.
And let’s sing!

I hope ‘the does song’ helps.

Ho, ho, ho!  Let’s talk about Christmas!
Don’t know what to say about Christmas?  Today we’re going help you talk about Christmas.  Perhaps you have some Facebook friends or English speaking friends who celebrate Christmas. Here are somethings you can say to them.
The basic
Happy Christmas.
Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
Have a great Christmas!
Have a fantastic Christmas!
I wish you the best for Christmas!

Starting a conversation
What are you doing for Christmas?
What are your plans for Christmas?
What do people in your country do for Christmas?
How are you going to celebrate Christmas?

Let’s ask some people.
Hi Tom, how are you?
I’m good.
What are you doing for Christmas?
I’m going back to my mum’s.
Oh, and what will you do there?
Well, y’know, the usual Christmas things like eating, drinking and chatting with the family.

Will your whole family be there?
Yeah, pretty much.  My sis and her kids, granddad and nan (grandmother), we’re all going to be there.  Even dad will be there.

So what will you do on Christmas day?
My mum will cook a goose and we’ll probably be eating and drinking most of the day.

Hey, Clare, what are your plans for Christmas?
Oh, we’re having Christmas dinner at our place.  We’re having turkey again this year.  Well, it’s traditional!
Who’s going to your Christmas dinner?
My sisters and my parents are coming on Christmas day.  Off course, Jim and the kids will be there too!
Oh, your sisters are coming too.  That’ll be nice!
No, not really.
They’re always fighting each other.  Last Christmas they fought over a pair of shoes that Jim bought them.  It was really embarrassing!  And not good for the kids.

Will you decorate your house?
Possible answers;
Yes, I’ve already decorated my house.  (you can ask)  How have you decorated it?
Yes, I will.  (you can ask)  How will you decorated it?
For example;
Clare, will you decorate your house?
Yes, actually, we’ve already decorated it.
How have you decorated it?
We’ve put up a Christmas tree and decorated it with lights and tinsel.  We’ve also put up lights around the house.

George,  how are you going to celebrate Christmas?
I’m going to celebrate Christmas with Bob and my mum.
We’re going to Thailand because the weather there is so much nicer than England.

In many countries, it’s cold this time of the year.
You can ask friends in other countries this;
Will it be a white Christmas with you?
Let’s ask Clare about England.
No, I don’t think so.  We don’t often have a white Christmas in England.  I think it’ll probably rain.
But some places will have a white Christmas.

Also, people who celebrate Christmas often buy presents for family and friends.   So you can ask
Have you bought your Christmas presents yet?
What have you bought for (name)? (What have you bought for Clare? Or What have you bought for your mum?)
Have you done your Christmas shopping yet?
Hi Clare, what have you bought for Jim?
Oh, I’ve bought him some chocolates.
Hi Tom, have you done your Christmas shopping yet?
No, not yet.
But Tom, it’s nearly Christmas!
Don’t worry, I usually do my Christmas shopping on the 24th
Isn’t that leaving it to the last minute?
Well, yes, it’s a little bit stressful but I always get it done.
Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, we hope that you have a great time over the next couple of weeks.

And if you do celebrate Christmas – Merry Christmas!
